Annular Solar Eclipse - 2019

An Annular Solar Eclipse is set to occur on 26 Dec 2019 (Thursday). The central part of the shadow of the Moon will race across southern India and will pass right through Udhagamandalam (Ooty). The partial eclipse will begin at 08:05 AM and end at 11:09 AM. At mid-eclipse, around 09:26:58 AM, the Moon will be a bit smaller than the Sun in the sky, and will not be able to cover all of its surface, leading to a thin ring of light from the Sun.

To celebrate this celestial spectacle, public viewing of the eclipse is being organised at two different locations - the Radio Astronomy Centre, Muthorai, Ooty and Sports Ground, Govt. Arts College, Ooty . Volunteers will be at both locations to guide the public in seeing the eclipse safely, using telescope projection as well as with eclipse glasses. Remember, it is dangerous to look directly at the Sun using a telescope, binoculars or naked eyes. This event is being organised by the RAC, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Science Forum, Khagol Mandal, and the Public Outreach and Education Committee of the Astronomical Society of India.

Come join us with your friends and family to enjoy the eclipse safely! Entry is free, but capacity is limited.
